האם רצוי לחקור שדה שבו אנו, כחוקרים, מרגישים "בבית"? האם המגבלות והקשיים המתעוררים מכך עולים על היתרונות? במקרים רבים חוקרי חינוך, סוציולוגיה, מדע המדינה, מדע הדתות , וכן משפטנים, חוקרי מזרח תיכון וחוקרי עבודה סוציאלית הם אנשים הפעילים בפרקטיקה של התחום ושייכים לקהילה המקצועית. בחלק מהמקרים הם שייכים למעגל החברתי ותרבותי הרחב של הקבוצה או הקהילה אותה הם חוקרים. הפרספקטיבה הדואלית של insider-outsider עשויה לשמש ככלי מחקרי רב-עוצמה, אך בה בעת יש בה גם סכנות אתיות ומתודולוגיות לא מבוטלות. הקבוצה שמה לה למטרה לברר ולהתמודד עם סוגיות מתודולוגיות ואתיות הנובעות ממציאות זו, דרך שיח בין חוקרים מדיסציפלינות שונות, החוקרים את שדה הפעולה המקצועי שלהם.
עבודת הקבוצה
במפגשי הקבוצה נעסוק בחיפוש אחר פרשנות אמינה לחומרי המחקר שלנו, ונתמודד עם דילמות הנובעות ממחקר בסביבה הקרובה. נעשה זאת באמצעות קריאת מאמרים מתודולוגיים, שיח עם חוקרים מנוסים, ובעיקר דרך שיתוף בחומרי המחקר ושיח על ההתלבטויות האתיות והמתודולוגיות העולות מהם. מתוך החיבור בין התיאוריה והפרקטיקה המחקרית ננסה למפות ולאפיין אתגרים וקשיים המאפיינים מחקר בשדה קרוב, ולהתמודד איתם.

” Research at your home base”: Dilemmas of Researchers in Their Immediate Surroundings
Is it desirable that we study a field in which we, as researchers, feel “at home”? Do the limitations and difficulties outweigh the benefits?
In many cases, researchers in the fields of education, sociology, political science, religious studies, Law, as well as scholars of the Middle East and social work are individuals active in the practice of their field who also belong to the professional community. In some cases, they belong to the wider social and cultural circle of the group or the community they are studying. The dual "Insider-Outsider" perspective might prove to be a powerful research tool, however, there are at the same time considerable ethical and methodological dangers. This group aims to examine and clarify methodological and ethical issues stemming from this reality, by means of discourse between scholars from different disciplines who are studying their own professional field of action.
Our group sessions will be devoted to seeking reliable interpretation of our study materials and to discussing the dilemmas arising from research in the immediate surroundings. Toward this end we will read methodological articles, talk with experienced researchers and, in particular, share research data and discuss the ensuing ethical and methodological dilemmas. By linking between the theory and research practice we aim to map and portray challenges and difficulties that characterize near-field research, and to suggest ways deal with them.
