28.02.23 - מפגש חמישי: פילולוגיה ואוריינטליזם

במפגש החמישי דנו בשאלות האתיות העולות מן המחקר הפילולוגי כשהוא נעשה כחלק מחקר תרבותו של האחר. קראנו בספרו של אדוארד סעיד 'אוריינטליזם', במיקוד בחלקים העוסקים בפילולוגיה של הלשונות השמיות. בין היתר, דנו בשאלה האם ביקורת מסוג זה תקפה לגבי עצם המתודה הפילולוגית או רק לגבי שימושה בהקשרים מסוימים, האם היא תקפה גם לגבי קבוצות החוקרות את תרבותן בכלים פילולוגיים (למשל - יהודים העוסקים במדעי היהדות), ומה הן היתרונות והנזקים של תרבות אקדמית שביקורת זו מכוננת.

 

Fifth Session: Philology and Orientalism

In the fifth session we discussed the ethical questions that arise from philological research which is done as part of the study of the other's culture. We read Edward Said's book 'Orientalism', focusing on the parts dealing with Semitic philology. Among other things, we discussed the question of whether this type of criticism is valid regarding the philological method itself or only regarding its use in certain contexts, whether it is also valid regarding groups that study their culture with philological tools (for example - Jews within Jewish Studies), and what are the benefits and harms of an academic culture that this criticism creates.
