במפגש זה קראנו את הפרק הראשון מתוך התרגום של "הארי פוטר ואבן החכמים" לארמית של התלמוד הבבלי, שעליו עובד אלון ברנד בזמנו הפנוי. המפגש הוקדש מצד אחד לדיון בדיאלקט הבבלי ובמאפיינים המיוחדים לו, ומצד שני באתגר של יצירה בשפה עתיקה ובהתאמתה לכתיבה ספרותית מודרנית. אלון שיתף אותנו בהתלבטויות שמלוות את תהליך התרגום, ובמיוחד בתחומים שבהם האנגלית עשירה והארמית ענייה כמו קומפרטיבים וסופרלטיבים, וכן שדות סמנטיים שלמים שאינם קיימים, למשל השדה של "נוראמליות" לעומת "אב־נורמאליות", שהן תמות חזקות בפרק המדובר. מכיוון שמדובר בפרויקט בהכנה, המשתתפים גם יכלו להציע שיפורים בתרגום, ובתוך כך לדייק את ההבנה בדקדוק הארמית הבבלית ובסגנונה. באווירה משעשעת ואב־נורמאלית זו סיימנו את המפגשים של השנה.

Eleventh Session (15.12.2021): Harry Potter in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic

In the final session, we read the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, translated into the Aramaic of the Babylonian Talmud, which Alon Brand is working on during his spare time. The session focused on surveying the Babylonian dialect and its peculiarities on the one hand, and on discussing the challenges of generating text in an ancient language and of appropriating it to modern prose writing on the other. Alon shared with us the dilemmas he faces during translation, especially the areas in which English is richer than Aramaic, such as comparatives and superlatives, as well as semantic fields which simply do not exist in the latter language, such as "normality" vs. "abnormality", core themes of the said chapter. Since this is a work in progress, the participants could suggest improvements in the translation, all the while improving our grasp of the grammatical and stylistic minutiae of the Babylonian dialect. On this lighthearted and abnormal note, we completed our sessions for the year.
