לקראת גנאולוגיה של תת המודע האנושי (פטריק סיאנג לין לים - גנטיקה)

מה גרם להפרדה הנצחית של האנושות מבעלי החיים בטבע? אמנם יש הנוטרים לחווה או לפרומתיאוס, אך אנו עשויים גם 'להאשים' היסטוריה של מיליוני שנות אבולוציה. לפני שנשאל 'מה עושה אותנו אנושיים?' אנו צריכים להתחיל בתהייה 'מה עושה אותנו בעלי חיים?'. אם תגובות אינסטינקטיביות הן תנאי מקדים לחיי בעלי החיים, לאן הלכו האינסטינקטים האלו כשבני האדם 'השיגו מודעות'? האם ישנן השלכות לרגשות שעוצבו ונגזרו מפסיכולוגיה של מוח לטאה קדום? האם נוכל אי פעם להיות 'אדוני הבית הפרטי שלנו'? תיאוריות פסיכואנליטיות שהוצעו בתחילה ע"י זיגמונד פרויד ופותחו ע"י קארל יונג, סיפקו כלי רעיוני כדי לגשת לשאלות האלו. בקצרה נטען שיש 'תת מודע' שמשפיע על ההתנהגות והפסיכולוגיה האנושית. בעשור האחרון מצטברות עדויות לתמיכה באינטגרציית תיאוריות של תת המודע עם ההבנה הנוכחית שלנו את הנוירופיזיולוגיה והקוגניציה.

קבוצה זו תקיים מחקר בין-תחומי של תת המודע האנושי כתופעה המושפעת מתרבות שצמחה בנפש שעוצבה באופן אבולוציוני. נדון בטקסטים המתבססים על ממצאים אמפיריים, בפרט מתחומי האתולוגיה והפרימטולוגיה, עד לפסיכולוגיה אבולוציונית וקוגניציה, ולעבודות ספקולטיביות יותר בסוציולוגיה ופסיכואנליזה. אחת ממטרות הקבוצה היא לכתוב בשיתוף פעולה מאמר שיתבסס על קריאה ועיבוד המידע המשותף. תלמידי דוקטורט ותואר שני מהחוגים הבאים מוזמנים בשמחה להגיש מועמדות: פלאואנתרופולוגיה, פסיכולוגיה, ביולוגיה אבולוציונית, מדעי המוח, קוגניציה וסוציולוגיה. המפגשים יתקיימו באנגלית.

Towards a Genealogy of the Human Unconscious (Patrick Siang Lin Lim – Genetics)

What caused humankind’s eternal separation from nature? Although resentment may lie with Eve or Prometheus, we must also blame millions of years of evolutionary history. Indeed, before we ask, ‘what makes us human?’, perhaps we should start by considering: ‘what makes us animals?’. If instinctual responses are prerequisites for animal life, where did these instincts go when humans gained ‘consciousness’? Are there implications to having emotions carved out of the primordial psychologies of our lizard-brained ancestors? Can we ever be ‘masters in our own house’? Psychoanalysis, initially proposed by Sigmund Freud and later expanded by Carl Jung, provides a key conceptual tool for addressing these questions. Namely, that there exists an ‘unconscious’ which influences human behavior and psychology. The last decade has seen increasing support for integration of theories of the unconscious with our current understanding of neurophysiology and cognition.

This group will involve interdisciplinary study of the human unconscious as a culturally imposed phenomenon that arose out of an evolutionarily shaped psyche. We will begin by reading texts grounded in empirical findings from ethology and archeology, before moving to recent work in evolutionary psychology and anthropology, and finish by discussing speculative texts in sociology and psychoanalysis. An overarching aim of the group will be to generate a collaborative piece of writing based on our collective readings and synthesis.

PhD and second-degree students from the following disciplines are encouraged to apply: paleo-anthropology, psychology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, cognition, sociology. The sessions will be conducted in English.
