Sixth Meeting (27.4.22): Civilization and its Discontents (Chapters 1-4)

We each read individually the first three chapters of Freud's Civilisation and its Discontents. In our session we took turns reading chapter 4 and started discussing some of the themes Freud raised in relation to the origin of civilization and the topics we had previously discussed in earlier sessions. A particular point of contention we had was the relationship between the 'drives' and 'instincts' that Freud constantly refers to. How do we reconcile this with what we know about early hominins and their communities and socialisation?
