In our final meeting we began by discussing the writing project we had been planning. After doing so we continued with the eighth and last chapter. Here Freud closes off his speculations on the intractable problems of human civilization. He states that the aggressive tendencies of humanity and its unconscious energies are irreconcilable with the peaceful and utopic goals of civilization. A central theme is the issue of the selfish actor that will cause the downfall of an otherwise altruistically-inclined community. In our discussion we raised points of how humans do not necessarily have this all-encompassing innate urge towards fulfilling their own 'purely' selfish desires, but rather that our desires may also align with the community as a whole.
