Holistic approach to urban forestry in times of climate change

We're seeing global changes on our planet caused by climate change, including rising temperatures around the globe. This new challenge requires our attention and a fresh approach to urban life in the public sphere. Plants and trees are major players in urban spaces, offering many advantages - from reducing mean temperatures in streets to filtering pollutants from the air and providing habitats for biological diversity like birds and insects. While these benefits are well-known, they're usually discussed from just one perspective - the biological-ecological. Beyond these advantages, it's important to research how plants and trees affect public perception and the mental health of people living in urban areas. The goal of our group activity is to discuss the gaps in our knowledge of urban forestry and what we want to see in our future. Our group will approach this topic holistically, examining the gaps from different disciplinary perspectives - ecological, geographical, historical, physiological, and more. We'll try to connect all these topics to better understand the gap between what we expect and the reality we live in. Another aim of our group is to make the field accessible to various populations, including children and government officials involved in urban forestry.

We'll meet once a month this year in various locations including Jerusalem, Merkaz, and online via Zoom. We'll discuss urban forestry from different angles and invite lecturers from the field. We're also interested in doing fieldwork. The first meeting will be at the end of November 2025.
