Thoughts on Occupation: The Israeli Occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (1967-) - Fourth meeting (11.5.20): The bureaucracy of the Occupation

On Monday, 11th May, we held our fourth session under the title: "The bureaucracy of the Occupation" chaired by Youssef Mnaili. The meeting took place online with the participation of six people. Dr. Yael Berda, from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (Hebrew University), initiated the conversation with some introductory remarks from her book "Living Emergency: Israel's Permit Regime in the Occupied West Bank."

The discussion lasted for two hours and revolved around: 1) the institutional and bureaucratic modes of governance of the Palestinians, involving both military and civilian apparatuses 2) the growing importance of the settlers in the institutions of Occupation. The role of the Palestinian Authority was also raised - if it can be considered an integral part of the Occupation's bureaucracy. This theme shall be discussed in more detail in the coming session. The participants also made comparisons between different scholars that varied in their perspectives of the nature of the administrative systems of the Israeli Occupation.
