Walid and Youssef presented a PowerPoint short presentation and summarized the main arguments of Avinoam Shlomo and Noura Ereket (two reading papers). The main idea here is to understand the juridical meaning of the Occupation. The participants concentrated on the best terminology to describe the Israeli presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. While one of the text (Avinoam Shlomo) contended that it does not fulfill the juridical requirements of an occupation, other texts (Erekat) adhered to the term colonialism. The Participants elaborated on this debate, and presented other alternatives such as meaning of domination. Other participants reminded us that while the Palestinians argue that the Israelis occupy their territories, the Israeli settlers on their part also argue that the Palestinians are but occupiers in Judia and Samera.
In the second section, Walid and Yousseff presented other readings, and opened the discussion around the Israeli practices in the occupied territories in light of Neve Gordon's theses. Most of the contributions raised by the participants were preliminary since the main theme of the first discussion was general. For instance, issues related to the equality between Palestinians and Israelis was connected with the right of movement, economic conditions, political rule and sovereignty. The members agreed that all these ideas should be elaborated in later session with a more fine-tuned manner.
