Fifth Meeting (17.2.22): Agency between Identity and Belonging

In the fifth meeting, we discussed the text “On the multidimensional formation of belonging in Israel: a biographical study in the field of co-existence education”, by Lena Kahle.

Through biographical interviews, the author intends to discuss the multidimensions of belonging, specifically in the context of Palestinian and Jewish citizens that work in co-existence programs in Israel. The concepts of agency and belonging are central in the text, although not fully developed. Thus, this was one of the main points of discussion in the group meeting. We tried to reach a better definition of agency by linking this concept to the one of performance, present in the previously discussed text.

We also began to discuss the difference between identity and belonging, while some questions such as “How much power do we have to shape our belonging and identity” were discussed. At the end of the meeting, we talked about possible formats for our open meeting.
